The BBC is to create a brand new TV channel named “Mel & Sue”, as part of a plan which will see the biggest ever investment in the careers of former British Bake-Off presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.
The channel will include an hour-long news programme, hosted by Mel & Sue, at 9pm every weekday. The pair will also host sports programmes, light entertainment programmes, quiz shows, features, reality shows and will present the weather.
The BBC’s director-general said the channel would begin broadcasting “almost immediately” and would have a budget of £40 billion.
Lord Hall told us, “This new channel will be a huge boost for the careers of Perkins & Giedroyc. It’s an exciting time for the pair and for the millions of loyal fans who love them.”
“The Mel & Sue Channel will be bold, creative and ambitious,” said Hall, “With two of the nation’s favourite broadcasters at its heart. It will show drama, factual, comedy and current affairs, all hosted by either Perkins or Giedroyc or both.”
The first shows to be announced are Mel & Sue’s Generation Game, Mel & Sue’s Dragon’s Den, Mel & Sue’s Pointless, and a Mel & Sue sitcom entitled simply “Mel & Sue.”
Sue Perkins is 63.
